Know what to build before you pay to build it

Most software budget goes on the wrong thing. We work out what’s worth building, what you should just buy, and what to leave alone.

When this helps

You don’t need this if you already know exactly what you want built. You probably do need it if any of these sound familiar.

  • You’ve been quoted wildly different numbers by different developers and can’t tell why.
  • You’re not sure whether to buy something off the shelf or build it.
  • A previous build stalled, and you don’t want to repeat it.
  • You know the process is broken but not which part is worth fixing first.

What you walk away with

  • A written view of what to build, what to buy, and what to leave alone — with the reasoning, not just the verdict.
  • A realistic scope and cost range for the part worth doing first.
  • The risks named up front, including the ones that make a build go sideways.
  • No obligation to have me build it. If the answer is “buy this instead”, that’s the answer.

How it runs

A short engagement, usually one to two weeks. It starts with a call, then a look at how the work actually moves through your business today — the spreadsheets, the handoffs, the bits people do twice. You get the write-up at the end.

Common questions

What does a technology consultant actually do?

The useful version answers what is worth building before anyone writes code: what to build, what to buy instead, and what to leave alone. That means looking at how work moves through the business today — the spreadsheets, the handoffs, the steps done twice — and returning a written view with the reasoning, a realistic scope and cost range, and the risks named up front.

Do we have to use you for the build afterwards?

No. If the answer is that an off-the-shelf product already does the job, you will get the name of the product and no invoice for the conversation.
