Case Study

A financial planning app that tells you exactly what you can afford.

A web app that goes past basic budgeting into real financial modeling — net worth tracking, investment breakdowns, debt, and a purpose-built affordability engine that gives a straight answer to "can I actually afford this?"

The challenge

Most people know they should budget and invest, but generic advice like "spend less" isn't actionable. What they actually want to know is specific: can I afford this car, this hobby, this purchase — and if not, what would need to change?

What we built

A personal finance and net-worth planning platform that goes well beyond a simple budgeting spreadsheet.

  • Income and expense budgeting
  • An investment breakdown engine — calculates how much to invest and how to allocate it based on income and goals
  • Real-time net worth tracking across assets, debts, and current position
  • Future net-worth projection based on current financial trajectory
  • Debt tracking
  • An affordability engine for big purchases and hobbies — for a car, it checks the cost against a safe threshold around 10% of income; for hobby spending, a stricter threshold around 5%. If a purchase doesn't fit, it tells you exactly how much you can safely spend, or how much more you'd need to earn to afford it comfortably

If a purchase doesn't fit safely within your budget, the app doesn't just say no — it tells you exactly what you can spend, or what you'd need to earn to afford it.

The technical foundation

A custom calculation engine handles investment allocation and affordability logic — the rules aren't hardcoded thresholds bolted onto a generic budgeting template, they're built around how the client actually wanted the numbers to work. Given how sensitive financial data is, everything is encrypted in transit and at rest, with strict per-user access control so nobody sees financial data that isn't theirs.

The outcome

Turns vague financial anxiety into a concrete, personalized answer — not "spend less," but "here's exactly what you can afford, and what it'd take to afford more."
