About Notara

Notara is a Sydney-based software development company that builds custom business systems for Australian organisations. Our work includes operations systems that replace spreadsheets and manual processes, customer and staff portals with role-based access, and first versions of new products. Every system is scoped and priced in writing, delivered in stages, and handed over running in the client’s name.

About the role

We are seeking a Software Engineer to design, build and scale the systems we deliver for clients. The role covers the full stack, from database design and application development to the cloud infrastructure that supports systems as they grow. Projects are built on Next.js, Supabase and Vercel, with Stripe, Resend and the Claude API where required. The successful candidate will also lead work on systems that outgrow managed platforms, including migrations to AWS and container-based infrastructure.

Key responsibilities

  • Design, develop and maintain full-stack web applications using Next.js, React and Postgres.
  • Design database schemas and implement access control, including row-level security policies.
  • Identify and resolve performance issues as systems scale, including query optimisation, indexing, caching and background processing.
  • Plan and carry out migrations from managed platforms to AWS, using containers and Kubernetes where the workload justifies it.
  • Build and maintain infrastructure as code, CI/CD pipelines, monitoring and alerting.
  • Apply secure development practices, including authentication, permission boundaries, secrets management and least-privilege access.
  • Estimate work and change requests accurately to support client quoting.
  • Communicate with clients on technical matters throughout a project, including walkthroughs and user acceptance testing.
  • Produce clear technical documentation and runbooks to support handover.

Essential requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or a related field.
  • 3+ years of professional experience building and running production web applications.
  • Strong experience with React or Next.js, JavaScript or TypeScript, and Postgres.
  • Demonstrated experience scaling a system under production load.
  • Hands-on experience with AWS, including compute, networking, IAM and managed databases.
  • Experience running containerised workloads in production with Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including explaining technical decisions to non-technical clients.
  • Full working rights in Australia.

Desirable

  • Infrastructure as code with Terraform or AWS CDK.
  • Caching and queueing systems such as Redis or Amazon SQS.
  • Observability tooling such as Sentry, OpenTelemetry or Datadog.
  • Load testing and automated test suites.
  • Integrating Stripe, Resend or the Claude API.
  • AWS or Kubernetes certification.

How to apply

Use the Apply button on any open role, or the register your interest form for anything else. The form asks which area you are after, takes your résumé, and gives you room to say why Notara. If you would rather send something else — a repository, a system you have built — email hello@notara.com.au instead.

We read everything and we reply. If a role is open you will hear where it is up to. If nothing is open we will tell you that rather than leaving you waiting.

  • Notara welcomes applicants from every background. If you need an adjustment at any stage, tell us and we will make it.
  • What you send is handled under our Privacy Policy. Applications are kept only while they might be useful, and you can ask us to delete yours at any time.
